Wandle start the new year with a good team performance.
A concerned referee inspected the partly frozen pitch with players safety in mind, however after allowing for the frost to thaw out, the pitched was deemed playable and the game was on.
Wandle started brightly and created the opening chances, notably Darius mazy run from just inside South Banks' half which resulted in a strike that the keeper parried away. It wasn't long before Wandle were on the score sheet, a fabulous 30 yard pass from Jake found Jessie on the edge of the penalty area, after a bit of a scramble Jessie was able to rifle the ball into the roof of the net.
Wandle now with the wind in their tails, began to attack in droves. South Bank were finding it difficult to deal with the industrial work rate of Jermaine, Conner, Jake and Darius. Both teams created chances, however neither were able to convert them into goals, thus the half ended 1 – 0.
The second half started with South Bank on the offensive, creating chances and having the lions share of the game. Wandle made some changes to the team which had an instant impact, within minutes of Marcus entering the frame he was on the score sheet. A sweeping move from right to left found Marcus unmarked on the left, with time and space to measure an exquisite finish in the bottom right corner (in off the post). Although Wandle were now 2 – 0 up, South Bank continued to push forward and with minutes to go a counter attacking move down the right, saw Jermaine carry the ball forward and cross to his strike partner Morgan, who finished first time past a scrambling keeper.
The game ended 3 – 0 to Wandle, but it wasn't the result which was pleasing, it was the teamwork, effort and communication put into the performance in Baltic like conditions. Darius (Man of the Match) and Jake worked the wings very well, Conner showed the tenaciousness that has been asked of him and Jermaine was a thorn in South Banks defence all game. Well done!
